Have you ever wondered where God is? Why do some people seem to have the Jesus thing figured out, but you are left to agonize His whereabouts in silence? Chances are it is because you may have looked at, tried, or at least thought about a variety of “spiritual” things, but you have never had that moment when you started your personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
How does one have a personal relationship with Jesus and does He really want one with me? John 3:16 says, “ For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him, should not perish, but have everlasting life.” God wants a relationship with you so much that He was willing to let His son (Jesus) pay for your sins. So, how does one begin this personal relationship?
The Bible is clear on just how easy it is to begin your relationship with Christ. It tells us that there are four basic things that we need to know, understand and accept.
The first step in beginning a relationship with Christ is to realize that you are in fact a sinner. (I know that may come as a complete surprise to you.) Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:10 says, “There is none righteous, no not one.”These verses from the Bible simply mean that everyone is a sinner - including religious people. Romans 3:23 even says that when compared to God, every individual on the earth will come up short. If you realize that there are times through your actions, motives and thoughts that you go against God’s laws and rules (major and minor ones) for living, then you realize that you are in fact a sinner. This is the first step and it is an easy one for an honest person to accept and admit.
The second step in beginning a relationship with Christ is to realize that there must be a punishment for our sin. This is different than suffering the results of our sin. If God is holy, (and He is) then He must have devised a punishment for breaking His laws. Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”Revelation 20:14 tells us what is meant by death. “And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.” In Romans 6:23 the word wages is used. This tells us that this is a punishment that we have earned through our disobedience and disregard for God. However unpleasant this is, there is good news. But, first we must remember there are four things we needed to know, understand and accept. The first is that we are a sinner. The second is that there is a punishment for my sin.
The third step in beginning a relationship with Christ is to realize that Jesus Christ has already paid your penalty or punishment for you. Romans 5:8 says, “But God commendeth (showed) his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Read this verse again and see who Christ died for. It was for sinners! That is you and me. This is great news! It means that I do not have to get my life all straightened out before He will have a relationship with me. It means that He will take me just as I am with one condition. We said that there were four things we needed to know, understand and accept. The first is that we are a sinner. The second is that there is a punishment for my sin. The third thing is that Jesus Christ has already paid for my sin. Now comes the fourth thing we need to know, understand and accept. It is the one condition that must be met for God to accept you just as you are.
The fourth step in beginning a relationship with Christ is that you must accept Him as your Savior by realizing that He is the only one that can save you from your sin and by asking Him to forgive your sins. Romans 10:9-10 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” These verses tell us that in order to have a personal relationship with God, we must realize that we are a sinner and that Jesus Christ died to pay for our sins, and we must make a conscience decision to ask Him to forgive us. Romans 10:13 says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord, shall be saved.” In order for us to find forgiveness, we must simply ask.
We said at the beginning that there are four things that we must know, understand and accept. You know that you are a sinner. The Bible tells us that there is a punishment for sin in a place called hell. However, Jesus has already paid for your sins. You must simply accept Him as your Savior. Wouldn’t you like to begin that relationship with God right now? Why not acknowledge Jesus as your Savior and ask His forgiveness for your sin?
If you would like to accept Jesus as your Savior right now, use the prayer below as a guide and ask Him for His forgiveness. He will forgive you just as you are.
I know that I am a sinner. I know that you died to pay for my sin. Come into my life and forgive me of my sin. I accept you as my Savior now. Thank you for saving me and for giving me a relationship with you. Amen.
