His skills were sanctified “I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem who knows how to play the harp…” vs. 18a His valor was verified “…He is also a valiant man, a warrior…” vs. 18b “David answered Saul, ‘Your servant has been tending his father's sheep. Whenever a lion or a bear came and carried off a lamb from the flock, I went after it, struck it down, and rescued [the lamb] from its mouth. If it reared up against me, I would grab it by its fur, strike it down, and kill it.’” 1 Samuel 17:34-35 “With you I can attack a barrier, and with my God I can leap over a wall…For who is God besides the Lord? And who is a rock? Only our God…He clothes me with strength…He trains my hands for war…You widen a place beneath me for my steps, and my ankles do not give way.” Psalm 18 (selected) His manners were multiplied “…eloquent, handsome…” vs. 18c His devotion was dignified “…and the Lord was with him.” vs. 18d David “in the mean time” was a minister to man. “Now the Spirit of the Lord had left Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord began to torment him.” vs. 14 “So Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine, and one young goat and sent them by his son David to Saul. When David came to Saul and entered his service, Saul admired him greatly, and David became his armor bearer.” vss. 20-21 He found favor with the king “When David came to Saul and entered his service, Saul admired him greatly…” vs. 21 He was fashioned for his future “…Let David remain in my service, for I am pleased with him.” vs. 22 David “in the mean time” was faithful to his father “One day, Jesse had told his son David, ‘Take this half bushel of roasted grain along with these loaves of bread for your brothers and hurry to their camp. Also take these ten portions of cheese to the field commander. Check on the welfare of your brothers…” 1 Samuel 17: 17-18 “The Lord is my light and my salvation – whom should I fear?” Psalm 27:1 |
